2025 Waste Audit by Thornlea's Eco-Team

On November 27th, Thornlea’s Eco-Team students participated in a waste audit. During this waste audit, students measured the mass of recycling and garbage throughout the school. Each recycling bag was carefully observed for contents such as batteries, food waste, recyclable materials, containers and other disposable items. Garbage bags were observed for plastic, drink containers, single-use items, and any items that do not belong, such as recyclable materials. Students also noted whether food waste, tea bags, paper bags and outdoor materials such as grass and leaves were being disposed of in their proper streams. By combining the numbers together, the Eco-Team discovered that Thornlea's diversion rate is 45.1% which means that almost half of the waste is being recycled. To improve this number, the Eco-Team plans to post signage around trash bins, announce the progress of diversion, and utilize their social media account, tleaecoclub, to keep students educated and informed about proper waste management. With knowledge of our data, the school's hard working caretakers have begun putting compost bins in the cafeteria, servery, and Family Studies classrooms to help improve the diversion rate.
