School Council News
Hello Thornlea Families! We hope your students are settling in and enjoying the first month of school.
Thornlea School Council consists of a group of parents committed to building a vibrant, supportive school community where every student can thrive. Through this bi-weekly newsletter, we will keep you informed about upcoming Council events, resources, and opportunities to get involved.
A big thank-you to our Principal, Mr. Belmonte, the Admin team, and our amazing teachers and staff for launching the school year with such positive energy and dedication!
Let’s stay connected—sign up for our Email List to be the first to hear about our initiatives -https://forms.gle/o1Qjm1wBtQku2SAr7. If you have questions or would like to volunteer, we would love to hear from you. Together, we can make this a fantastic year for our students!
Your Support is Needed! Student Activity Council Fee
The Student Activity Council (SAC) fee is essential to keeping Thornlea’s extra-curricular programs alive. Without it, the school cannot offer many of the activities that make our community vibrant and engaging. An enriched school life is beneficial to our students’ physical and mental health. However, extra-curricular activities are not supported by government funding, so our students need your help!
The SAC fee directly funds over 50 active clubs, arts showcases, wellness events, STEM and Math contests, spirit days, Culture Day, Thornstock, sustainability initiatives, Grade 9 Orientation, celebrations, performances, and transportation support for field trips and sports events. For 2025-26, discounts on Homecoming and Prom tickets will be offered to students who have paid their SAC fee.
Thornlea students rely on every family’s contribution—your support of the $35 SAC fee (via School Cash Online) will allow all students, including your own, to benefit from the various opportunities available throughout this school year. We sincerely thank you for your support!
Highlights of Our First School Council Meeting
Thornlea welcomed parents and guardians to the first School Council meeting of the year with introductions from the administration team, along with the teacher representative and the Thornlea Student Activity Council student representative.
For 2025-26, the School Council elected 15 members and formed a Fundraising Committee. Parents reviewed YRDSB’s fundraising policies, noting that fundraising is voluntary but is crucial in supporting student-run clubs, activities and events.
Other discussions included cafeteria capacity, course timetabling, and the installation of vape detectors to support student safety.
The next School Council meeting will take place on Monday, October 27, 2025, and we look forward to meeting with you.
