School Council Meeting on Monday, September 14

The first School Council meeting is scheduled for Monday, September 14 at 7:00 PM in the Library. At this meeting we will be holding elections for positions on our Council.  If you would like to run for a position please complete a School Council Nomination Form.  You can get more information and access an electronic version of the nomination form here: School Councils.  Please send the completed form to thornlea.ss@sc.yrdsb.ca by Friday, September 11 or bring it to the meeting on September 14.  

Back to School forms

Each year, we ask all parents/guardians to complete important back-to-school forms. The back-to-school forms can be found in the family dashboard at family.yrdsb.ca. Click on the arrow by your child’s name, select the back-to-school forms button and choose your language.

Please follow these steps for each child. Forms will automatically populate with your child’s information through the Family Dashboard.

The back-to-school forms are also available online at https://startupforms.yrdsb.ca. You will need your child’s student number. Tips are available on the Board website. Translation is also available on the website. 

Frequently asked questions and additional information on how to complete the back-to-school forms are available on the Board website under Family Resources (click on the “Need Help” link for Back-to-School Forms). 

It is important that these back-to-school forms are completed as soon as possible at the start of the school year. There are both mandatory and optional forms. The forms are to be completed for all students. Your child's school will access the information. 

Please complete a separate form for each child attending our schools. 

Secondary school students will also be asked to review important school and Board policies and to indicate that they have reviewed this information on forms sent to their student GAPPS account.

If you prefer to complete the back-to-school forms on paper or have questions about the information in the forms, please contact your school office.

School Year Information

At the start of the year, schools share with families a package of information about the school. Please ensure you review this important information. Families are also encouraged to review the online Guide to the School Year. 

Clean, Safe Spaces

We want to ensure that our washroom facilities are safe spaces for everyone.  Thornlea is a scent free environment.  Vaping is prohibited on or near school property.  Keeping public spaces free from scents, smoke, vapours, and other substances is a human right. Those with sensitivities, allergies, and health issues can become ill when exposed and deserve a clean environment.  Violations of these and other Safe Schools rules can be reported directly to the main office or confidentially using the Report It tool. Please be aware that incidents of vaping could result in disciplinary action in accordance with the YRDSB Caring and Safe Schools Policy.

Transportation Devices

In Ontario, you must be 16 or older to ride an e-scooter or e-bike. 

Every rider of a bike or scooter must wear a properly fitting bike helmet.  Riders of e-scooters cannot carry passengers or cargo.  Students using any transportation device, whether electronic or non-electronic, must dismount before arriving on school property. This includes all sidewalks, pathways, and walkways on school grounds. Transportation devices should be secured at designated racks only and not throughout school property.  The school is not responsible for lost or damaged equipment. These transportation devices may not be used for leisure purposes on school property.  During school hours including lunch, students may not ride in the parking lot and up and down driveways.  Parents of reckless riders will be contacted and privileges revoked.  In cases where students are involved in a collision causing injury or property damage, York Region Police will be contacted.  Concerns involving riders can be reported to the office directly or using the Report It tool.
