English Department

Welcome to Thornlea's English Department! Our mission is to promote and support student achievement through a commitment to identity-affirming practices. We strive to create a learning environment where students see themselves reflected, explore new perspectives, and develop empathy through literature and media. This approach fosters critical thinking and cultivates essential skills in reading, writing, speaking, and multimedia creation.

Students engage with a diverse range of texts, spanning both contemporary and historical periods. Our course offerings include De-streamed, Applied/College, Academic/University, and pre-AP/AP options—each thoughtfully designed to support a variety of learning needs, goals, and pathways.

AP and Pre-AP English

Thornlea Secondary School offers the Advanced Placement Program for students who want to challenge themselves with a more rigorous curriculum.  We invite all students who are willing to accept the challenge of a more demanding academic curriculum to consider enrolment in pre-AP and AP English.  Although they are not mandatory, taking Pre-AP English courses is highly recommended for success in AP English.

The Advanced Placement Program (AP) is an international course of study written by university professors, which allows students to write standardized exams around the world.  Successful completion of the AP English Literature and Composition exam in May can earn credits or advanced standing at universities in Canada and abroad.  The biggest incentive for students enrolled in the program, is that they will be well prepared to meet the challenge of university courses.
