Welcome to Thornlea's English Department Page! Our department is comprised of an enthusiastic group of highly experienced professionals who look forward to sharing their love of literature and writing with the Thornlea student population. Our English classes promote student engagement in critical thinking and in the essential communication skills of reading, writing, speaking, and creating media texts. Students will analyze literary texts from contemporary and historical periods, interpret and evaluate informational and graphic texts, and create oral, written, and media texts in a variety of forms. We offer a variety of courses: Applied/College, Academic/University and pre-AP/AP, and encourage and support all students to succeed by providing them with time and guidance.
AP and Pre-AP English
The York Region District School Board has chosen Thornlea Secondary School to offer the Advanced Placement Program for students who want to challenge themselves with a more rigorous curriculum. We invite all students who are willing to accept the challenge of a more demanding academic curriculum to consider enrolment in pre-AP and AP English. Although they are not mandatory, taking Pre-AP English courses is highly recommended for success in AP English.
The Advanced Placement Program (AP) is an international course of study written by university professors, which allows students to write standardized exams around the world. Successful completion of the AP English Literature and Composition exam in May can earn credits or advanced standing at universities in Canada and abroad. The biggest incentive for students enrolled in the program, is that they will be well prepared to meet the challenge of university courses.
